poorest country of the northern hemisphere, Haiti ranks 146th out of 177
countries on the human development index according to the 2007/2008 Human

Enfants
du Monde projects in Haiti
Community
animation and education for adolescents
Context:
In the area of Bel Air, in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince,
approximately 75% of the population survives with an income lower than
700 gourds per month (CHF 26.-). This terrible economic and social situation
particularly affects children, young people and women. A third of children
under 5 years of age suffer chronic malnutrition. The schooling rate is
lower than 65%. Prostitution and sexual and physical violence affect an
increasing number of adolescent girls. Children and youth are entangled
in the infernal circle of misery, crime and traffics of different kinds,
but mainly of drugs.

Project
: In collaboration with the
local association Solidarité Ant Jèn-Veye Yo (SAJ
VEYE YO), Enfants du Monde endeavours to improve the situation
of children and youth of the underprivileged area of Bel Air,
through a community education and animation programme.
Parents
are encouraged to take part in community dynamics to lay the
bases for a parents' association, active, involved and viable.
The establishment of a meeting centre for women helps them to
know and promote their rights. By
the end of March 2009, approximately 500 children, teenagers
and parents will benefit from this project

Partner
: Saj (Solidarité ant Jèn) is an organization of
socio-political character created in January 1986 within the movement
to fight for change which characterized the period of the fall of the
Duvalier dictatorship. Initially Saj was an organization of young people
very close to the action of committed priests, in particular of the former
president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. In 1992, it merged with Veye Yo (which
means "we pay attention"), a pressure group made up of various
committees that fight against the offences of the catholic hierarchy towards
the basic ecclesiastic communities, who themselves fought against the
dictatorship. EdM has been collaborating with SAJ VEYE YO since 1996.
